Alan J. Plourde

A little about Alan:  Well he had been married for 23 years and was never able to afford a bike.  We started dating after his divorce and I had my Harley so we started talking about having Alan get one.  He had in mind what he wanted and that was a night train.  Well the search was on.  He looked up and down the east coast and finally found one in Pawtucket, RI.  So 4 1/2 hours down to RI, he fell in love with what he saw right then and there.  The dealership needed a $1000.00 down to hold it, and he looked at me and said, I don't have that kind of money.  Well it just so happened I did!  So needless to say it all started then.  Of course we had to wait for finances to go through, so back home we came.  So another trip was needed back to RI to pick up his new bike.  Alan was like a child in a candy store. Oh, did I mention he didn't have a motorcycle license.  So off to find where and when he could get into a class.  Now it was off to MA for his class, 3 1/2 hours one way.  Well he passed the class and that started his new lifestyle.

He enjoyed riding.  It gave him a new lease on life, new adventures and travel.  He joined Augusta HOG,& UBM, Lincoln County.

We took a 14 hour ride to the White mountains with his son the fall he got his license.  I did explain that the Kancamagus Highway was a little curvy, but I forgot about the hairpin turn.  Once we did the 32 miles, we pulled over the side of the road, and he looked at me and asked was I testing his driving skills.  I do have to admit he was a little pale.  Well the three of us just starting laughing.  We got to travel around, go to a HOG rally and just enoy the wind in our faces.

Alan wanted to help other bikers if they got hurt, his profession being a nurse, so he joined the Biker Down Committee.

Before he passed away he wanted to take one more bike ride.  I knew he wasn't strong enough to hold up his own bike, so I talked with Bill Lewis and Bill agreed to give Alan his last bike ride.  We strapped him to the bike, and his 3 children,Ben 24, Kristi 21, and Megan 20, his brother, Marc, Bill's wife Heather and myself headed to Ocean Point, took pictures, sat for awhile and headed back to the hospital.  Alan was smiling from ear to ear being on a bike one more time.

Alan passed away a couple of weeks after his last bike ride at the age of 46, but I will always have the memories, the laughter, the trips and of course the look on his face the day he got his Night Train.

Thanks for being interested in my story about Alan.

Sincerely,
Debbie Locantore

The person I want remembered is my father Butchie Merritt.
He was a person who loved the outdoors. He built his log cabin in Brownfield himself.
He was a member of the UBM when he was murdered on Nov. 13th 1986 in Brownfield Maine.
